Risk Assessment

The whole basis of good health and safety management relies on first identifying what hazards and risk are present in the workplace. This is known as risk assessment. It also happens to be the legal MUST when you employ 5 or more. We would involve your people as it is vital to understand the process and the task to identify the risks and identify the necessary control measures. We can also train your own staff to undertake the assessments which will develop their skills and ownership.

Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) or Method Statements

Where the risk assessment identifies a significant risk, employers have a legal responsibility to implement a SSOW.

SSOW are known by various names depending on the industry or company (e.g. Working Procedures (WP’s), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s)s etc.), however they will only comply if they accurately define how the hazardous elements of a task are controlled.

SSOW are designed to standardise your working practices for two key reasons;

  1. So no one gets hurt or injured
  2. So staff can be trained to carry out the task exactly as you wish it to be done

Once produced they should be strictly implemented. They are therefore the benchmark used to determine fault should an accident occur.

Clearly from this perspective it is important to get the balance right between insufficient relevant detail that expose employees to unsafe working practices, and too much unnecessary detail which would impede efficient working. IM&SS have experience to ensure the right balance.

Manual Handling Assessments

Carrying out specific manual handling assessments where the task has repetitive bending, lifting and twisting, or pulling/pushing will help identify the safest way and usually a more efficient way of completing the task, reduce injuries and absence rates as well as comply with your statutory obligations.

Display Screen Equipment Assessments (DSE)

We can undertake your DSE assessments to help you identify workstation problems that could ultimately result in long term absences or health issues and recommend simple cost effective solutions to any problem found. Alternatively we can train your staff to be assessors.

COSHH Assessments

All businesses use chemicals and substances to a greater or lesser extent,and therefore should have on file some assessments that identify the hazards and risks specifically related to how and where you use the product. Also how you store it and transport it from storage to the point of use.

The supplier material safety data sheets will not cover this, so don’t get caught out. Alternatively we can train your staff to become assessors.

Policies and Procedures

This involves determining how you wish to control all the basic H&S issues, then drafting a H&S Policy Statement and producing the various policies.

The polies which can be produced in a manual allows you to define the responsibilities and organisation as well as the arrangements i.e. how you will control each element e.g. Risk Assessment, SSOW, Training, Work at Height, Noise, Work Equipment, Vans, Lorries and Forklifts, etc.

Once produced they will need implementing so they become working practice. IM&SS can work closely with you, your managers and supervisors to aid  a successful launch.
